Logan Howard Foulger

It's been a while since I've posted on here. But thought I'd better document Logan's birth story.
We decided to get induced a few days early for various reasons. I didn't sleep much the night before. Having a baby is kind of like Christmas but a bit more terrifying. Haha. You never know what's going to happen or how it's going to go. Kevin gave me a blessing, and we said a prayer. I definitely felt more at peace after that and knew it would all be Ok.
So August 9th we woke up bright and early, my sweet niece Ramey came over to stay with our kiddos until they woke up then they went to my brother's house to play with cousins the rest of the day.
We got all checked in to the hospital. I had two nurses. One that was training and an old vet. They were both pretty nice. They did have to fish around to place my IV so that wasn't the funnest. We sat around most of the morning. They would come in every so often and slowly turn up the pitocin. They let you have food and water now which was pretty nice. I wasn't starving like I had been with my other kids. Kevin and my mom were there playing the waiting game with me.
My doctor came in on his lunch break and we decided that I'd get my epidural and then he would come break my water. The epidural did not go as well as with my other kids. The anesthesiologist placed the epidural, wasn't happy with the placement so he did it again. It took a long time. Him pushing on my back and getting occasional zingers was stressing me out. Kind of the feeling when you go to the dentist and you hear them drilling and can feel them pounding. It definitely makes you sweat.
So they get that going and they're waiting for me to get numb so they can place my catheter and break my water. But I don't get numb. My right leg is getting numb but nothing else. So they have me lay on my side and give me a couple more hits of the medicine and I'm still not numb. They go ahead and place the catheter and break my water any way (not pleasant). My contractions were getting stronger and the epidural wasn't doing squat. So for maybe two hours (I have no idea how long anything took) they kept having me change positions to try and get the medicine in the right place. They end up calling the anesthesiologist back in, he adjusts the epidural and gives me a bolus which I guess is just a more potent form of the epidural medicine. We waited and that didn't help. So I had to decide whether to have him totally replace my epidural or go natural. I wanted them to check me first to see if I was close to delivering. They hadn't checked me once up to this point which I thought was super weird. They checked and I was only at a four or five. Still so far to go. So I decided to get another epidural.
This epidural actually went in pretty smoothly. And I didn't feel as anxious during it. But after they gave me the test amount of medicine my heart rate started to drop and I thought I was going to pass out. I kept asking if I could lay down yet. Luckily I didn't pass out and my heart rate got back to normal. I laid down and instantly started getting numb and feeling relief. I couldn't feel my contractions at all and dozed off for a while.
When I woke up I tried to sit up but I couldn't. I was numb up to my chest and the floor started to spin. I thought I was going to fall off the bed (even though I was laying down). The spinning wouldn't stop and I thought I was going to barf. They told me after I got my second epidural that I might feel a little loopy because I have had a lot of medicine with them placing multiple epidurals. And boy did I. I hated feeling like that so bad. I only felt ok if I was laying down. The nurses told me it was normal. And I fell back asleep.
They told me to tell them when I felt pressure by my bum. When I woke up I could feel pressure, so I told them and they said they didn't want to check me again because they had broken my water and didn't want to chance infection and that they would be able to tell when I was ready to push from baby's heart rate. Weird, but OK. So then fifteen minutes later or so I tell them that I'm still feeling pressure. Again they don't check. I told them again another fifteen minutes later and they decided to check me. Why I don't know. Maybe they saw some change on their monitors or something. But they were like Oh yep you're fully dilated. Lets have a baby. I felt like I was ready the first time I told them but again, what do I know.
I'm numb up to my chest but I could still totally tell when to push. Medicine is weird. It took one contraction and out came baby boy! Kevin was a rockstar and cut the cord this time. They put him up on my chest and let me love on him. I was still feeling pretty out of it. I knew what was going on but I kind of felt like I wasn't part of it. Like I was watching tv or something. I hated it so bad. It took a couple hours for that feeling to wear off. If I'd known the second epidural was going to make me feel like that I probably wouldn't have gotten it.
All in all though everything went pretty smoothly. He got here at 4:52pm healthy and happy. He weighed 8.5 and was 20.5 inches long. My biggest baby by two ounces :) Having a baby is such a miraculous thing. I feel so blessed that he got here safe and that he is healthy. So blessed.
He has been the sweetest thing too. He is pretty content just to sleep although he does prefer to be held, which I don't mind :)
Kevin brought the kiddos down to meet him the next day. They love him so much. Even Miles. They all just want to hold him constantly. Miles gets all concerned when Logan gets sad, "A Crying" he says. It's pretty cute.
Logan didn't have a name for the first 24 hours of his life. We finally decided on Logan Howard Foulger. I really like the name Logan and its kind of fun because Logan, Utah is where Kevin and me met. Howard is Kevin's paternal grandpa's name, his dad's middle name and my great grandpa's name. So that's kind of fun. Calum randomly was calling him Franklin Howard Foulger and my great grandpa was Howard Franklin Hambright so I thought that was funny that he just called him that randomly. Calum however, was not pleased when we told him we didn't name him Gus. They called him Gus the whole time he was in my stomach. We told him we named him Logan and Calum started to cry and ran out the front door. We decided that Gus could be his nickname. So we have been calling him Logan and Gus, and I keep calling him Miles! Calum told me he has called him Miles a couple times too because he remembers Miles being that little. So I'm glad it's not just me. Haha.
Having a newborn is hard. No one talks about how hard recovery is for a mom on top of getting no sleep with the new babe. Logan has actually been sleeping alright, and I am so glad to have Kevin around to help. He's been able to have some time off which has been really nice. I don't know what we'll do when he goes back to work. I'll have to put Miles in a cage or something to keep him away from Logan. He's pretty rough with him. Today he tried to bury him with a pillow and blanket and "rock him' in his bassinet. And he even swatted him on the head yesterday. Yikes! Logan is going to be tough, that's for sure.
We are so happy about our sweet new addition. We already love him so much. I love how sweet and little and soft he is. He has that perfect newborn smell and I never want him to get big. But I am also so excited to watch him grow and develop and become the man that Heavenly Father has sent him here to be. We love you Logan! So happy to have you be a part of our family.
